Is guild wars 2 and expansion to eye of the north or a whole new game?

Im getting back into the game and i only have guild wars and factions so i need nightfall and eye of the north, And im confused to what is what.. And if it is a whole new game, is it better than the old guild wars?Is guild wars 2 and expansion to eye of the north or a whole new game?
GW2 will be an entirely new game. It's due to be released either late in 2010 or 2011. Personally, I don't expect a release date before 2011.



Eye of the North is an expansion to the current game and it's designed to be a bridge between the games. There is an area called the Hall of Monuments and you can store all your accomplishments in this Hall. Those accomplishments will unlock various goodies in GW2. We don't know yet what type of goodies, but Anet has said they likely won't be anything that would give players a tactical advantage over new players. Probably just cool weapon and armor skins and unique minis.
