Is there a difference between Guild wars and guild wars eye of the north?

my friend got Guild wars original and i got eye of the noth? can we still play together? whats the diff?Is there a difference between Guild wars and guild wars eye of the north?
The guild wars disc includes 2 campainges (spelt wrong) prophicies and faction (I think) in order for you to play with your friend is if you complete the story on prophicies or faction, of if you buy nightfall and beat that story, Eye of The North is an expansion to "Guild Wars" and you open the expansion at Lions Arch, You guys wont be able to play, tell your friend he/she just wasted money on Eye Of The North
So called best answer is wrong on so many counts. The package that contains both Factions and Prophecies was a special bound together set they sold when Factions first came out. You don't have to complete any campaign to go to the Eye of the North either. How did this win best answer?

Guild Wars is the game, Eye Of the North is the expansion pack.

Guild Wars has 3 Campaigns that are stand alone games.

1st one - Prophecies

2nd one- Factions

3rd one - Nightfall

Your friend probably has Prophecies as that is sometimes known simply as Guild Wars.

Each Campaign can be played alone and contains an entire continent of content. However each campaign can also be integrated. In other words if you own all three and add them to the same account, your characters can then travel all three continents and access all items and skills, etc.

As someone said, if your friend has Guild Wars Prophecies only, you must have that to play with him. You could chat with him, visit each other's guild halls, etc, but you couldn't quest together unless you have access to the same continents.

Eye Of the North is an expansion pack, which is mostly end game content. You must have one of the 3 Guild Wars campaigns in order to use Eye Of the North.

Again, Eye Of The North has areas that you will both need that expansion pack to explore.

However your friend can get started with Guild Wars, you will need to buy one of the campaigns first.

Since he has Prophecies that's probably the one you should get. But Factions is a faster leveling campaign and also contains a lot of PVP stuff the other games don't have. Also as someone said Nightfall is how you get Heroes, also a fun part of the game.
eye of the north is an expansion pack. this means you can't even play the game with out one of the original games. the original games are guild wars prophecies (or just know as guild wars), guild wars nightfall, and guild wars factions. since your friend bought the original guild wars (guild wars prophecies) you should get that too because if you don't the only way you guys can meet is in Player vs Player and you can't do any missions or quests together which would really suck....Is there a difference between Guild wars and guild wars eye of the north?
The difference is Eye of the North is just an expansion pack sorta thing. Like an updated version. So as long as both of you have it you both can play together.
You will need to have one of the previous three campaigns in order to be able to play Eye of the North. Additionally, you can only play with your friend if you both have the same campaign installed.
